Risk Factors for Sciatica

One of the most common complaints by American adults is lower back pain. Experiencing constant or frequent lower back pain can make it difficult to perform day-to-day tasks.  Often our chiropractors at Holistic Health Clinic in Beaverton have found the culprit of lower back pain to be sciatica.  The good news is that Holistic Health Clinic can help.

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a specific type of pain that is typically caused by spine-related nerve issues. Running down through the back and into the legs, the sciatic nerve can be affected by a bone spur, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, and other conditions. As a result, when the sciatic nerve is affected. These areas of the body can become inflamed, numb, and painful. In some cases, the pain can be quite severe.

The Risk Factors of Sciatica

Like with most conditions, certain factors increase your risk of developing sciatica:

Age – The older you get, the less flexible your body is. As a result, it takes longer for the body to heal from injuries. Back pain is a common condition experienced by older adults, and it is intertwined with sciatica.

Obesity – Being overweight is one of the biggest risk factors for developing musculoskeletal problems like sciatica. Excess weight places additional pressure on the spine, and in turn, the sciatic nerve becomes compressed.

Improper Back Posture – The way you sit, stand, and walk have a direct impact on the sciatic nerve. If your spine is not aligned, it causes the muscles in the back to work harder, potentially causing fatigue and even nerve irritation.

Physically Demand Work – While physical activity is always recommended to help prevent and reduce back pain, repetitive motions can place excess pressure on the spine, irritating the sciatic nerve.

Diabetes – When blood sugar levels are higher than normal, healing and blood flow are both impaired. It can lead to nerve damage known as diabetic neuropathy as well as sciatica symptoms.

Smoking – Most people associate smoking with the lungs, but smoking can also increase the overall risk of back pain and sciatica. This is because smoking reduces circulation, increases inflammation, and weakens the body’s immune system.
