Sciatica

Sciatica Isn't Permanent

Sciatica is a notorious nerve malfunction that often occurs by surprise. Pregnant women suddenly lose their ability to stand and walk properly. Other people are practically immobilized by shooting, fiery pain in their upper leg and rear hip, literally keeping them imprisoned in bed. It can be triggered by sitting wrong for an extended period, such as on an airplane or long car ride, or can result from an unborn baby pressing on the sciatic nerve internally. The reasons vary, but the symptoms are similar. The person loses leg control and suffers debilitating pain that lasts for weeks.

Strength and Weakness

The sciatic nerve is one of the human nervous system's longest lines of communication. It stretches from the hip area down to the toes, a primary reason why it affects leg motor control. However, while that long nerve can carry body commands, sensory reception, and information to run an entire limb, it’s also prone to problems. These problems are often disc issues in the lower spine, a pinched or trapped nerve part, trauma damage, or swelling surrounding tissue.

Common sciatica symptoms include severe leg pain after sitting for hours, loss of feeling or sensation replaced by numbness, lower back pain that won’t go away, or burning pain that makes it impractical or impossible to stand up for any length of time.

Applied Professional Help

Chiropractic treatment can do much good for those suffering from sciatica. The first step involves correctly diagnosing the condition and ensuring it’s not something else creating similar symptoms. That involves a holistic approach to the spine, body, and nervous system versus focusing on an isolated area feeling a sign. Lifestyle, medical use, activities or lack of them, and any physical trauma experienced recently, are all examined.

Once the sciatica is confirmed, chiropractor treatment will start with applied mechanical massage, extensions, guided exercise, and pressure to release and return flexibility to the sciatic nerve path. If the nerve is pinched or pressured, this approach often releases the knot and helps trigger the body’s healing system to kick and make repairs.

Alternative Temperature Treatment

However, swelling is often a problem, causing constriction and loss of blood flow to the area, blocking repair. Temperature treatment involving cold and hot therapy is applied to force circulation to the site and break up swelling. The effects of swelling are caused by a massive flow of blood to immobilize the area, but the swelling can cause sciatic damage as it presses on the nerve. The goal is to reverse this condition. A lesser temperature treatment can involve ultrasound or cold laser treatments. Neither causes contact damage, but they trigger body reactions managed in treatment.

Hands-On Care

A chiropractic adjustment is another approach, using spinal change and manipulation to take pressure off discs or realign joints. Again, these have the effect of releasing pinched locations and reducing built-up tension.
